I have tried to provide a correct copy of the census, but with all transcriptions there are most likely errors.  Some names were very hard to read, and I interpreted them to the best of my ability.  You might study a name and come to a different conclusion.  My census transcriptions as well as the information I provide with links, are my understanding of the data.  But you are responsible for your own conclusions and I encourage you to verify the information I have shared. My desire to present a correct record of these families outweighs my ego, so please do not hesitate to question my information and share your conclusions with me---

1870 Census of Mercer Co. KY

Mercer:  p.526/7, 10/10, Pleasant Hill

Rebecca Roudl 28 F KY Pleasant Hill was a very well known Shaker community.  Starting with the very first household in Pleasant Hill (town and post office) this part of the community seemed to consist of a series of group homes.  House 1/1 had two ministers, and two elders.  House 2/2 had men between the ages of 60 and 70.  House 3/3 had men between  the ages of 38 and 62.  House 4/4 had 26 males between the ages of 6 and 37.  House 5/5, 6/6, 7/7, 8/8 and 9/9 had women between the ages of 30 and 80.  There were approximately 350 people in this Shaker community.

Sally Isaacs, 12, was most likely the daughter of Mary Ann Cates and her husband Thomas Isaacs, the son of Samuel Isaacs (1794-1859) and his wife Sarah.  I have been told by an Isaacs' descendent that a Mary Ann Cates married an Isaacs and had four children, Nancy Jane born about 1851, Susan born about 1853, John born about 1855 and Sarah M. born about 1858.  She said she doesn't know what happened to the parents but both the younger girls ended up in a Shaker orphanage.  Nancy and John were in Laurel County in 1870, Susan was living with her Aunt Nancy (Cates) Bishop in Fayette County.

Wm Rose 45 M KY

William and Elizabeth Rose were in Madison County in 1850.  They had a six year old daughter Sarah, who is probably this Sarah Canter.  I don't know the relationship between the Roses and the Isaacs.

(George) Washington Isaacs married Mary Baker 16 February 1843, in Madison County. George was the son of Samuel Isaacs (1794-1859) and his first wife. Mary was the daughter of Greenberry Baker. Madison Co. VR: Un-named male born to George and Mary 14 April 1853.  In 1860 (George) Washington Isaacs was living in Grant County with his wife Mary and his family of six children which included a two year old daughter Effigue, and a one year old son Ide.  I imagine this child (Effy G.) is actually Ide, but it could be Effigue mistakenly listed as a male.  Samuel Isaacs, the son of George Washington and Mary Baker was living with Godfrey Isaacs, (George's brother) also in Scott County.  George's sons Samuel and Ide were both in Owen County in 1880.  (George) Washington Isaacs son, Samuel married to Sarah Canter sometime after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census.

Isiac Godfee

36 M

KY

The enumerator listed Godfrey Isaacs as Isiac Godfee on this census, but it is evident that this was Godfrey Isaacs, the son of Samuel Isaacs (1794-1859) and his wife Sarah, who married Malinda Wilder on 3 March 1859 in Jackson County.  Malinda Wilder was the daughter of William and Sally Wilder. On the 1860 census, Godfrey's widowed mother,  Sarah Isaacs, aged 64 was living with him.  Sarah was also living with Godfrey on this census and was listed as Sallie Isaac. Godfrey's nephew Samuel, son of his brother George Washington Isaacs was also listed in this household.   I don't know if Malaine is Malinda Wilder, but if she is the name is a bit different and the age is off by 8 or so years.  This might be a 2nd marriage.

Godfrey Isaacs served as a Private in Company B, 4th KY Volunteer (Mounted) Infantry During the Civil War.  He died in 1888, in Madison County.  According to his pension record his wife predeceased him.

I don't know who the parents of these Maze children are.  The surname for Baily, 63, seemed to be Simon or Swain, but it was crossed out and very hard to read.  Baily was listed as black.
